In Algeria, football quickly becomes a stage on which frustrations, expectations and national excuse mechanisms are projected.

Algerian football loves dramas because it sometimes finds in them a way to avoid diagnosis. The 3-0 defeat to Argentina put the national team under pressure before the match against Jordan. The FAF referred the arbitration issue to FIFA. Luca Zidane, selected as goalkeeper for this World Cup opener, is exposed to criticism. Supporters look for culprits, commentators look for signs, and the country begins again to live football as a matter of national dignity.

The levels must be distinguished. If refereeing errors affected the match, the federation has the right to signal them through official channels. Refereeing is not a detail when it changes the course of a game. In a global tournament, a contentious decision can break momentum, alter a ranking and weigh on a team’s confidence. The FAF’s recourse is not illegitimate in itself.

But refereeing cannot become the permanent hiding place of insufficiencies. A heavy defeat is also read through play, tactical choices, mental preparation, management of weak moments, quality of build-up, collective maturity and offensive efficiency. A serious sporting nation must know how to contest injustice without hiding inside it. This is exactly where the difference lies between a culture of competition and a culture of excuse.

The Luca Zidane case concentrates another tension. His selection, his symbolic family name, alleged errors on the first goals and the scale of criticism say something about Algeria’s relationship to imported figures, charged names and magical expectations. A goalkeeper does not become a savior because he carries an illustrious surname. He must be evaluated like everyone else: level, psychological state, form, relationship with the defence and ability to respond after a mistake.

The danger now would be to turn one player into a scapegoat. Football is a collective sport. An individual error exists, but it is inscribed inside a structure. Why does the team concede those situations? How does it defend? Who protects the box? Who slows the opponent? Who offers passing solutions? Who speaks on the pitch? A team that leaves the whole story of defeat to its goalkeeper refuses to look at its architecture.

The African balance after the first World Cup matchday shows mixed fortunes: some selections won, others secured encouraging draws, several missed their opening. In a tournament expanded to 48 teams, Africa retains real chances of placing several representatives in the next round. But this new opening also makes comparisons more painful. Algeria can no longer settle for invoking group difficulty or the opponent’s quality. It must show it can answer pressure.

The match against Jordan thus becomes a test of truth. Not only for the ranking, but for the team’s ability to recover coherence, stop enduring and become an actor in its tournament again. Major competitions do not forgive teams that spend more time explaining than correcting. The urgency is clear: rebuild the mental block, clarify choices, protect players without relieving them of responsibility, and play the match instead of replaying the previous defeat forever.

This sporting mirror sends the country a familiar image. Whenever failure happens, people look for the referee, the enemy, conspiracy, bad luck, the single culprit. Sometimes these factors exist. They never explain everything. A society that wants progress must learn to hold two requirements together: denounce injustice when it is real and look at its own flaws without trembling.

Football is not politics, but it often borrows its reflexes. Algeria will win when it stops confusing pride with susceptibility, contestation with victimhood, patriotism with refusal of assessment. A national team is not only a flag on a shirt. It is an organization, a method, a discipline, a work culture, courage in defeat and the capacity to rise quickly.

Against Jordan, Algeria does not need a heroic narrative. It needs a clean, intelligent, intense and controlled match. The rest will come after. Or it will not come.

Karim Medjani

Sources utilisées

Press : BBC Afrique, “Coupe du monde 2026 : bilan des dix équipes africaines après la première journée”.

Press : TSA Algérie, “Algérie-Jordanie : Luca Zidane titulaire ?”.

Press : TSA Algérie, “Algérie-Argentine : la FAF saisit la FIFA sur l’arbitrage”.

Press : TSA Algérie, “Mondial 2026 : le Qatar humilié, l’Algérie sous pression”.

The defeat against Argentina, the Algerian federation’s referral to FIFA, criticism around Luca Zidane and the decisive match against Jordan go beyond the pitch.
