Sexual deepfakes are often described as a technological problem. That framing is too narrow. The image is synthetic, but the violence is real. The target is not only privacy. It is reputation, credibility, professional life and the right of women to remain visible in public space without being punished by sexual humiliation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sexual violence without contact, but not without victims<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The false nature of the image does not reduce the damage. On the contrary, it creates a trap. The victim is forced to prove that what is seen is false, while the circulation itself produces suspicion, mockery and fear. Digital violence works because it does not need truth to injure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Suspicion as an instrument of silence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For women in politics, journalism, activism or public debate, the threat is clear: speak, and your body can be fabricated against you. This is why sexual deepfakes function politically. They do not merely attack one person. They warn others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The weapon is humiliation. Its strategic effect is withdrawal: fewer women speaking, fewer women campaigning, fewer women occupying spaces where power is contested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Platforms, law and organised delay<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The law often arrives after the harm. Platforms remove content slowly or unevenly. Victims must document, report, explain and relive the violence. Meanwhile, copies circulate. The delay becomes part of the aggression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A serious legal response must therefore focus on rapid removal, platform responsibility, civil and criminal remedies, and protection against re-publication. It must also recognise that the damage begins with circulation, not only with proof of production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The law must look at harm<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The central legal question is not only whether an image is authentic. It is whether it was produced and circulated to violate, intimidate, defame or exclude. When the law remains trapped in the technical nature of the image, it misses the social nature of the violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sexual deepfakes are a battle over equal presence. A public space where women can be digitally stripped, fabricated and humiliated is not an open public space. It is a space where technology updates an old political weapon: making women pay for visibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
