It is one of its central mechanisms. When routes close, markets collapse, harvests fail and aid is blocked, famine ceases to be a natural disaster: it becomes the social face of political collapse.

What the fact reveals

The Sudanese war has broken more than institutions. It has broken the circulation of food, money, fuel and protection. A country can move from shortage to famine not only because food is absent, but because the system that allows food to reach people has been shattered.

This is why the classifications used by humanitarian agencies matter. Famine declared, famine projected, catastrophic food insecurity, acute malnutrition: each term has a technical meaning and must be handled carefully. But behind those distinctions lies one basic fact: millions of people are being pushed into hunger by a war that has turned civilian life into a battlefield.

The political point

The responsibility is structural before it is rhetorical. Armed actors may deny, accuse or relativize. But when aid convoys cannot move, when farmers cannot plant, when markets are looted or cut off, when families flee repeatedly, hunger becomes a weapon even when no one declares it as such.

The international response remains trapped between alarm and impotence. Statements multiply, funding remains insufficient, access is negotiated piecemeal, and the humanitarian system is asked to compensate for the destruction of political order. It cannot. Aid can delay death. It cannot replace a state, roads, security and harvests.

The Sudanese catastrophe therefore says something larger about contemporary wars: they do not only kill through bullets and bombs. They kill through the organized collapse of ordinary life. Famine is not the shadow of the war. It is one of the ways the war continues.

Sources utilisées

Sources used: Reuters, Associated Press, IPC, OCHA, WFP to verify.

To verify before publication: official documents, figures, dates and legal qualifications where applicable.

Sudan’s hunger is not an accident on the margins of the war.
