Who was targeted, who was killed, who counted the dead, and which legal category applies to the event are no longer technical details. They are part of the war itself.

What the fact reveals

The military language of precision has become one of the central instruments of the conflict. A site is described as a command post, a militant is identified, a building is presented as a military node. Opposite that language stands another register: hospitals, shelters, displaced families, bodies counted by medical services and humanitarian actors. Between the two, the law is invoked but rarely allowed to govern the violence.

This does not mean that every reported figure can be repeated without caution. In a war zone, numbers must be attributed, locations checked, and responsibility formulated with discipline. But caution cannot become a device for erasing civilians. The need to verify a toll is not a license to make the dead disappear from the analysis.

The political point

What Gaza reveals is the collapse of a shared evidentiary space. The Israeli military frames the battlefield through target identification; Palestinian and humanitarian sources frame it through the effects of strikes on the population. International institutions try to stabilize a minimum vocabulary, but even that vocabulary is contested.

The political problem is therefore not only the number of deaths. It is the repeated transformation of civilian space into a permanent suspect zone. When hospitals, schools, shelters and neighborhoods become possible extensions of the battlefield, the distinction between civilian and military objects is not abolished in law, but it is weakened in practice.

That is why the war over targets and tolls matters. It determines what can be mourned, what can be denied, what can be prosecuted and what can be normalized. In Gaza, the violence does not end when the strike ends. It continues in the struggle to name what happened.

Sources utilisées

Sources used: Reuters, Associated Press, OCHA/UN sources to verify.

To verify before publication: official documents, figures, dates and legal qualifications where applicable.

In Gaza, every strike is followed by a second battle: the battle over words.
